Why do I need to do this test? Did you know that bowel cancer is the third most common of cancers and one of the most treatable if detected early enough? 85% of men refuse to consult a doctor even if they have symptoms and screening programmes in the USA have reduced mortality by 1/3rd. This test detects the presence of blood in the faeces, which may be indicative of an underlying condition. The lining of your gut (gastro-intestinal tract) may bleed if it is injured. It has been suggested that all people over 50 years of age should be screening themselves regularly for early signs of bowel disorders. Your symptoms may include any or all of the following: Blood in stools, tiredness, weight loss, abdominal pain, passing mucus, intermittent diarrhoea and constipation, tiredness, indigestion, nausea and vomiting. You may find it useful to complete the following risk assessment. It should assist you to gain a clearer picture of your symptoms and gauge the clinical relevance of this test. NB This questionnaire is only intended as a guide and is not designed to be diagnostic or replace the advice of a doctor.
a) I am interested in screening for bowel disorders?
b) There is a family history of bowel disease?
c) I am over 50 years of age?
d) I have repeated constipation and/or diarrhoea?
e) My stools are dark or black?
f) I have been feeling tired/lost weight ?
If the answer to any of the above is yes, then taking the test may be beneficial. If the test is positive you should consult your doctor. If negative, then discuss possible lifestyle improvements with your pharmacist. Remember that all these symptoms can be caused by a variety of conditions and if they persist, you should consult your GP to discuss.
