1) Development of the symptoms.
2) No symptoms but you may carry the organism and pass it onto someone else.
3) Chronic infection where the organism may cause long-term complications without any sign of acute symptoms.
In women, symptoms, if present are often "non-specific" i.e they can be mistaken for something else. These symptoms include changes in vaginal discharge, pain on passing urine and spotting between periods or bleeding after sex. Chlamydia can infect the uterus and block the fallopian tubes, causing infertility, even in the absence of acute symptoms. Sometimes, women get a apin in the lower abdomen, indicating possible pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may be caused by Chlamydia.
If men get symptoms these range from an obvious discharge from the urethra (pipe) in the penis and/or severe pain on passing urine, to a very mild irritation at the end of the urethra. Men can suffer from swollen testicles as a result of this infection (epididymitis, or epididymo-orchitis). Also Chlamydia is asscociated with arthritis in some men. Many men get symptoms which are mild and resolve without any treatment, but they may still pass the infection to their partner(s).
It is important to remembe that when symptoms have gone away the infection may remain and can be passed on to another sexual partner if no pretection is used.
