Personal Screening Diabetes Screening Test is an easy to use visual test to detect the presence or absence of glucose in urine and a helpful indicator in the potential early detection of diabetes. 2 tests for home use.

Pack Contains: 1 foil pouch containing two test strips, 1 sample cup, 1 disposable vinyl glove (CE grade 1 manufactured to BS-EN 455 parts 1 & 2), 1 instruction leaflet.

Why do I need to do this test?

Did you know that there are an estimated 1 million undiagnosed diabetics in the UK and that diabetes is the single most common cause of blindness and lower leg and foot amputations? Diabetes also raises the risk of heart disease and is the 5th most common cause of death in developing countries.

Having diabetes means that your body cannot properly use sugar and starch (carbohydrates) from your diet because the pancreas is not producing enough of the regulating hormone insulin. As a result, glucose accumulates in the blood and tissues and can cause defects in various parts of the body.

Up to 4.5% of the NHS budget is spent on treating the complications (heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, stroke, amputations) that have already developed before diagnosis. The majority of late-onset diabetics have type 2 non-insulin dependent diabetes, which can often be well controlled using just dietary measures and oral medication.

Your symptoms may include any or all of the following: Tiredness, irritability, weight loss, feeling constantly thirsty and passing water more often, increased susceptibility to infection and poor healing.

You may find it useful to complete the following risk assessment. It should assist you to gain a clearer picture of your symptoms and gauge the clinical relevance of this test.

NB This questionnaire is only intended as a guide and is not designed to be diagnostic or replace the advice of a doctor.

a) I am interested in screening myself for diabetes?
b) There is a history of diabetes in the family?
c) I am over 45 years old?
d) I am constantly feeling thirsty?
e) I am passing water very frequently?
f) I feel tired and irritable?
g) I am overweight?

If the answer to any of the above is yes then taking the test may be beneficial.
If the test is positive you should consult your doctor.
If negative then, discuss possible lifestyle improvements with your pharmacist.
Remember that all these symptoms can be caused by a variety of conditions and if they persist, you should consult your GP to discuss.
