How will the 'Happy Mums, Happy Tums' appeal help?

The largest problem mums in Sierra Leone face is access to a balanced and nutritious diet for their babies and young children. The goal is to support community-led initiatives which are able to provide sustainable sources of nutritious food for mums, children and communities. The plan of action is to:
  • Identify and refer malnourished children and pregnant women to health services.
  • Help local communities take advantage of the most nutritious locally grown food. For example, providing chickens or goats for a food source that is more sustainable.
  • Improve access to healthcare services.
  • Support long-term sustainable changes that can be maintained by the local community. This could mean training community health workers and improving access options to health clinics after the project has ended.

Where will the money go?

  • Just £6 can provide a family with a breeding pairs of chickens which means a continuous supply of eggs and chicks to share with other families in the community.
  • £18 helps provide 10 undernourished children with access to emergency food to improve their health and save their lives.
  • £54 could provide one community health worker with important training and resources needed to promoted the best nutrition possible to new mums.
  • £188 is a months salary for a social worker that ensures the most vulnerable community members get the support they need to help themselves and children.
