Littmann Cardiology III Spare Parts – The Essential Guide
Share
Late in 2015, 3M released their spares range in a handy new kit format. Combining diaphragms, rims and ear tips in one pack. The Littmann Cardiology III Spare Parts Kit is a cost-effective and convenient way of replacing worn-out stethoscope parts.
To learn how to safely swap to your Littmann Cardiology III spare parts, read our guide and watch our video below.
To remove the original ear tips from you Littmann Cardiology III Stethoscope, simply grip the metal tubing in one hand and pull firmly on the earpiece until it pops off.
To replace the ear tips, reverse the process. Line the earpiece up, with the thin end against the tubing, and push until it snaps on over all three ridges. These ridges form the tight acoustic seal that helps to give Littmann stethoscopes their exceptional sound transmission qualities.
Replacing Littmann Cardiology III Diaphragms
There are two diaphragms on the Littmann Cardiology III stethoscope. Both the adult and paediatric diaphragms are replaced in the same way.
When removing the diaphragm, it is important to remember that it is actually in two parts, the diaphragm and rim.
The first part to come off is always the rim. Roll one side of it down, pushing out and towards the middle of the chest piece. The rest of the rim should then come off easily.

Once the rim has been removed, the diaphragm can be gently levered out with your nail.

If your rim and diaphragm are attached in your spare parts kit, push them apart as it is easier to fit them separately. First, place the diaphragm on the stethoscope so that it is covering the edges of the chest piece.
Fit the rim, starting from one side and pushing it into place around the edge of the chest piece and diaphragm. You should hear a soft click when it is fully, and correctly, fitted. If you need to stretch the rim a little, this won’t damage it but be careful not to use too much force when doing so.

Once the rim has been fit to the stethoscope, make sure that it isn’t trapping any of the flange of the diaphragm as this will reduce the acoustic sensitivity.
Upgrading Your Littmann Cardiology III
[caption id="attachment_1133" align="alignright" width="168"] The Cardiology IV features revolutionary materials technology and looks smart to boot![/caption]
In March 2016, the exceptional Littmann Cardiology IV stethoscope was released. Featuring huge improvements to the materials used, the Cardiology IV is more durable and more acoustically sensitive than the Cardiology III.
In older models of Littmann stethoscope, the tubing could become cracked if it was exposed to the skin for too long. By contrast the tubing on the Cardiology IV is made of a rubber latex free material which is highly resistant to skin oils. This dramatically increases the lifespan of the stethoscope.
The diaphragm and rim have been simplified and are now a single-piece diaphragm. This has lead to improved acoustic sensitivity and, as a side effect, much improved infection control. This is due the there being fewer places for pathogens to hide and cleaning being so simple.
If you have had your Cardiology III stethoscope for a long time and want to upgrade or your current stethoscope has become damaged, have a look at the Cardiology IV range here or get in touch to enquire.
