What is Social Value And Why Is It Important?

Social value measures the positive impact a company or organisation provides within both the community and the environment and is defined by the actions they take to give back to society and improve the lives of people around them.

Why this matters comes down to companies providing real-world benefits beyond simple financial gain and ensuring that there is a balance between what they are taking from the community and what they are giving back. This, in hand improves the trust of people and customers, as they can be sure that the company or organisation fits within their core personal values.

Here at Medisave, we believe that social value is a vital part of business, especially when working and associating with the medical industry, considering the importance they have in our lives and society. Because of this, we endeavour to ensure that social value is integrated into all aspects of our company and its operations.

Our Environmental Impact

At Medisave, we consider it essential that all our daily operations have as little impact as possible on the environment, and we are always thinking of ideas on how we can further reduce this so that we can eventually achieve a negative carbon footprint in as many of our processes as possible. This is done through many ways, like green energy sources, product procurement, and sustainable packaging.

One of the many ways we greatly reduce our carbon footprint is through our use of solar panels, which are installed on the roof of our warehouse and provide our facility with power to run all our daily business processes all while providing the energy grid with any excess power that we don't use so nothing goes to waste.

Along with this we have also put a lot of sustainability planning into the way we dispatch and deliver our customers orders, some ways we enforce this include using eco-friendly packaging like carbon-neutral tape, recycled packing paper, recyclable cardboard boxes and partnering with green couriers like Royal Mail and DPD.

Our media team also gaurantees that all our marketing prints are sustainably printed on carbon-captured paper using the carbon capture programme which helps to raise money for the Woodland Trust and by contributing to this has allowed them to plant over 300,000 trees creating 300 square meters of new woodland.

For all our staff that commute to work we offer a cycle to work scheme which gives them discounts on a wide range of bikes and gear, encouraging them to skip the drive and cycle to work to lower congestion and reduce CO₂
emissions.

Community Support & Donations

We believe that social value goes beyond the products we sell and the service we provide, and think it's important to serve both our local and global community of which we are a part of and create meaningful partnerships wherever possible, whether that's through charitable donations and sponsorships, fundraising initiatives or volunteering opportunities; we are always invested in making a real difference to people lives.

Over the years, we have participated in many fundraising events and activities for a range of different causes, charities and organisations. These events not only raise money but also provide an opportunity for our staff to come together, have fun and make a positive contribution to the community all while raising awareness.

We work with many organisations, including the Breast Cancer Now research and support charity which we fundraise for by participating in their wear it pink day every year, where staff are encouraged to wear pink clothing and do cake sales, and by doing this in 2025 we were able to raise £400 for their charity.

We have also worked with the Boo charity, who are a non-profit that supports young people in Kenya get education and life skills, who we raised money for by doing the Medisave Africa Challenge, which involved our team walking, running, cycling and skating a total distance of 1611.9 miles, which is how far away the continent of Africa is from the Medisave office by road.

Since 2007 we have also had the privilege of supporting The Butterfly Tree Foundation, a UK charity working with communities in Zambia suffering from HIV, malaria and poverty. Medisave supports The Butterfly Tree by providing stocks of medical supplies such as bandages and stethoscopes, helping remote clinics in Zambia provide care to their communities.

We are also a proud supporter of the DocBike organisation, who we provide with heavily discounted personalised first aid kits which they can then give out to new motorbike riders to keep motorists safe and trained for emergencys. Also to further support our local community, our media team are dedicated to working with local buisnesses and companys whenever possible when shooting content for our website, social media posts and advertisments, helping support local trade within the area of Dorset.

Ethical Product Sourcing

When ordering medical supplies, you want to be safe in the knowledge that they have come from ethical suppliers and have been sourced responsibly. This includes ensuring workers involved in manufacturing the products are operating in safe workplaces with a fair wage and no child or forced labor. And that they are environmentally responsible and doing their part to be a sustainable supplier by doing things like cutting down waste and lowering their carbon emissions.

We are committed to ensuring all our products are sourced responsibly, which is why we have a dedicated purchasing team that researches each potential supplier to make sure they fit in with our company values, all while keeping track of existing suppliers.

Doing this also takes the guesswork away from the customers and allows them to be sure that when they order from us, they can rest assured that they are getting ethically sourced products every time.

Staff Well-being

At Medisave, our staff are at the heart of our company so we are always committed to creating a friendly, supportive and inclusive work environment where they can feel valued and strive. By devoting our time to support our employees' health and well-being we create a workplace where they can feel comfortable working in and reach their highest potential all while providing great service to our customers.

The mental health of our employees is extremely important to us, and we want to make sure they are always supported with whatever they are going through. That is why we have assigned dedicated trained mental health first aiders who are there to support any staff member who may need support for issues both inside and outside of work. We also participate in the annual Mental Health Week where we raise awareness about the importance of mental health and encourage staff to go on walks together and give them opportunities to get involved with free activities like yoga. We also care about our staff's physical health and frequently offer our staff oportunities like on-site flu vaccinations and health assessments to keep them feeling great.

Promoting staff to get to know each other outside of work is a great way to boost morale and improve team dynamics, to enable this we set up social events like free football sessions and provide communal green spaces where staff can work together to grow their own vegetables. We also enjoy hosting our yearly summer party for our staff, where teams can get to know each other better in a more relaxed environment.

Support For The NHS & Healthcare Communitys

We believe that it's important not only to sell medical supplies but also to be a part of the whole national healthcare community and support the NHS whenever possible, and we see the vital role healthcare professionals play in caring for patients. That's why we are fully devoted to raising awareness of health issues and medical organisations.

We help raise awareness for many health campaigns and organisations throughout the year, including Restart a Heart Day in October, where we talk to people about the effects of cardiac arrests and how they can be prevented, and the Breast Cancer Now Foundation's Wear It Pink Day, which brings attention to the importance of breast cancer research. We have also worked with the Gill Harler fund, which raises awareness for ovarian cancer, by including awareness cards in orders to help educate women on early signs to secure faster diagnoses and better treatment results.

We have also formed a strong partnership with the British Medical Association, with whom we participate in events with and work together to provide students with discounts on supplies to support them through their studies.
