On impact, the protective shell springs in a little, thus spreading the impact out in time, thus again reducing the energy peak on the surrounding tissues.
Finally, the curved outer surface of the protective shells will encourage the wearer to roll on impact, thus diverting some of the fall energy into the roll, and again reducing the effect of the impact.
