FAQs

How to use a BD Vacutainer blood collection set?

You can either use a single-handed safety activation or a double-handed safety activation. Below are instructions for one-handed activation. See product documents for more information.

  1. Insert the needle into the patient's arm to commence blood collection.
  2. Once the blood draw is complete, apply light pressure to the site with three fingers and remove the blood collection set.
  3. Grasp the translucent yellow safety shield grip area with one hand and the tube with the other.
  4. Push the translucent yellow safety shield forward with your thumb and index finger until the needle is completely covered, and confirmed with an audible click.
  5. Once the needle is securely covered, dispose of the device in an appropriate sharps container.
